Our week at a glance:

Foundation Skills

**Unit 5, Week 3 Spelling Test: Wednesday, April 24th.

This week we will finish working with Unit 5, Lesson 3 words.  Lesson 3 involves words with prefixes referring to number or quantity or location.

Some prefixes refer to number or quantity:

  • The prefix uni- means “one.”
  • The prefix bi- means “two.”
  • The prefix tri- means “three.”
  • The prefix multi- means “more than one.”

Some prefixes refer to location:

  • The prefix mid- means “in the middle of.”
  • The prefix sub- means “under” or “below.”
  • The prefix trans- means “across” or “through.”
  • The prefix inter- means “between.”

The students have completed homework sheets with these prefixes.  Please help them with the meanings of the prefixes and help them prepare for the assessments.  On Wednesday, we will test on these words.  Thursday, we will begin working with lesson 4.  These words have words with the same base word (unlucky, luckily, luckiest) or shades of meaning words (tossed, hurled).  Please help your child practice these words to prepare for their upcoming spelling and word analysis assessments.

Reading and Responding

**Unit 5, Lesson 3 Assessment: Wednesday, April 24th.

This week we will finish working with Unit 5, Lesson 3 How Congress Works.  This informational text discusses the legislative branch of the U.S. government, the rules for electing senators and representatives, the duties of Congress, and the chambers of the U.S. Capitol building.  Monday and Tuesday, we will finish up our work with our story and take our fresh read assessment on Wednesday.  Please make sure you are reviewing the story vocabulary with your child.  On Thursday, we will begin working with Unit 5, Lesson 4 The United States Capitol.  This story tells of the history of our U.S. Capitol building.  As we read our story we will make connections and clarify.  We will also review sequence and classify and categorize as we read.  Please help your child practice their vocabulary words and have them read every night.  As you study the vocabulary words, point out key words in the definition and practice using them in a sentence.  Each Wednesday, we go to the library.  Your child should have a library book that they can read and test on.

Language Arts

This week we will be learning about forms of the verb to be (am, is, are, were) and other irregular verbs (eat/ate, fly/flew, bring/brought).  We will also learn about prepositions (from, at, before) and prepositional phrases (from the right, at school, before dinner). We will continue working in our poetry unit.  This week we will write a 5 senses poem.  We continue to practice handwriting weekly learning our cursive letters.
